is your answer.

1 ]* j8 `$ _4 v) t2 Z+ _, iIt's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in 3 c; x" {7 h3 Q4 K9 I, h+ k
numbers this nation has never seen, by people who waited three hours and
' t7 M( V$ B  j" p( e0 O0 ufour hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed
" t% c( S; h( M( L3 c9 Vthat this time must be different, that their voices could be that
6 l' U0 ]& t' k/ Y$ _8 `  Ddifference.
8 P0 c* j( C- \% C9 t( n# ^
/ a0 c0 J. V, ]% e8 \* n7 Z$ \0 yIt's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and 9 C. P3 `) a- K& J8 o
Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight,
* M* N+ T* N7 ?7 Idisabled and not disabled. Americans who sent a message to the world that
" x/ ^. L2 `: Z, ywe have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red " h  z; A- M5 Z: A) [: V; l
states and blue states.- O- I+ y: @! X8 \4 y

. X4 Z$ A' c6 ?9 S/ TWe are, and always will be, the United States of America.: N: _% d. p, J

It's the answer that led those who've been told for so long by so many to ; V! |3 E9 K/ n* u" s- ~% S# p6 @
be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their ! I% U+ d1 `4 r
hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a

It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this # I! p3 M5 K1 _1 Y
date in this election at this defining moment change has come to America.$ |% G3 c# F- I+ K# y% T, X

A little bit earlier this evening, I received an extraordinarily gracious + D* J4 d- j" ^  w1 H/ f0 ^
call from Sen. McCain.# C9 N- I: ]' o7 D1 F
" ~. a+ S5 y8 Q9 N, H+ S
Sen. McCain fought long and hard in this campaign. And he's fought even
6 _: l, H! w2 plonger and harder for the country that he loves. He has endured sacrifices
; v4 S2 \9 _9 H0 j* c. Y+ c3 qfor America that most of us cannot begin to imagine. We are better off for ! m: {9 U5 `- o; F, J% n* e4 M
the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader.0 e( s& |' x4 ^3 P4 ~- c$ @: d

I congratulate him; I congratulate Gov. Palin for all that they've

heart, and spoke for the men and women he grew up with on the streets of

with the family that made me who I am. I miss them tonight. I know that my

made this happen, and I am forever grateful for what you've sacrificed to

But above all, I will never forget who this victory truly belongs to. It * J1 A, e- t4 I; n( {! e( P& o

I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didn't start with * S3 T/ X- x3 y5 m" V( w  c: l
much money or many endorsements. Our campaign was not hatched in the halls
0 ^8 c' Z% X* Gof Washington. It began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms
1 C3 I% C$ T# e, C# Z& Bof Concord and the front porches of Charleston. It was built by working men ! T5 e" X- I3 q+ b: |
and women who dug into what little savings they had to give $5 and $10 and 3 I) y6 I( M3 Z6 f4 L0 j
$20 to the cause.
. X+ t0 e4 |' [0 B) L/ t" K& P1 V" u' O2 _, Y+ q
It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their , @9 s2 C* w! d3 P7 p+ d6 X
generation's apathy who left their homes and their families for jobs that 1 h& A  Y  d" ?/ M  u
offered little pay and less sleep.) X. ]" i+ E: t
$ e) {1 f. [/ n
It drew strength from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold
" h# i3 e: W# e$ p( t  Band scorching heat to knock on doors of perfect strangers, and from the
* k& V; N3 f2 W& Jmillions of Americans who volunteered and organized and proved that more : e' p+ i+ `  V6 }! }
than two centuries later a government of the people, by the people, and for
0 s" I! n5 I* `0 ^3 V3 a8 I) Sthe people has not perished from the Earth.7 L" x  a; \  D

# D& J: @& d& s" wThis is your victory.. g5 D2 {$ B* a1 @4 @  q
( o0 r+ M8 p1 Z: c8 D$ M$ B
And I know you didn't do this just to win an election. And I know you 7 l8 ]. _! }+ h' g$ I- j# Y2 K" s
didn't do it for me.) {. X0 }4 w9 Z% I6 l/ @

You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead. % @; y# t1 P2 R* _, S+ u* Q
For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will
' j" o* w; F# ?) ^. ]: q6 M6 fbring are the greatest of our lifetime -- two wars, a planet in peril, the % G$ S% x' Y. T& f2 K
worst financial crisis in a century.
' i, Q; o9 N6 D! I/ z. _2 W  v, s8 c! f$ j$ |% ?
Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up ! J! s( A+ u1 i5 J0 V. q
in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives
" u# l8 X' V; n6 ]; qfor us.: ^* p7 {6 V* x& B+ d% K4 C

! H4 V& P9 }( f+ U/ AThere are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after the children fall
* y7 f, A$ g, D8 |; J9 N0 |asleep and wonder how they'll make the mortgage or pay their doctors' bills 8 C4 ]: Y& D% M  G: ~
or save enough for their child's college education.
& I/ i8 R: T0 V/ R7 A) F1 c0 ^' P. X* }: ^9 G6 x9 F
There's new energy to harness, new jobs to be created, new schools to
; ]' B( A2 d# C2 g5 l& n+ w8 r/ `- b- n# wbuild, and threats to meet, alliances to repair.3 F5 g9 w6 G2 w7 _5 U* U- r
0 n8 o% W0 v% E% L
The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there
) C3 R+ r; [1 K! S6 Nin one year or even in one term. But, America, I have never been more
1 O9 R7 l* Z, C% |. Ohopeful than I am tonight that we will get there.

1 ?8 M" S. }3 Q' a- z5 vI promise you, we as a people will get there.& Y/ J. A7 F/ W6 z" w

) ^1 r0 c$ p' ~% W3 JThere will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won't agree + |! w! j$ z4 W1 }0 `4 U0 W0 L
with every decision or policy I make as president. And we know the
0 ]2 J9 q3 I- R: x5 ^; [government can't solve every problem.
3 X6 b/ e8 V7 t) ]3 V4 P; n
7 ]% d3 A0 P& ^8 N1 L. _+ zBut I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will
. D# D5 Z3 x  I9 x4 F/ N% flisten to you, especially when we disagree. And, above all, I will ask you # }. E7 p( l7 W. N$ \# y. d% I
to join in the work of remaking this nation, the only way it's been done in 8 {- o3 T. E7 e8 J2 ]
America for 221 years -- block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by
1 `6 L3 ^1 z+ M9 T5 Mcalloused hand.2 [) m' Z/ ~( I  {" x0 b
. z! p( }: ?* V; u' y4 J* {6 u& e4 k
What began 21 months ago in the depths of winter cannot end on this autumn

  I6 `% i! L. E$ W; `( ?This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us
6 b+ {& j) a' ~* p& k7 M  j2 Ito make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things
3 b; K$ s' |2 W+ w5 c* t! ywere.
+ }5 C% [5 i) P& ?* }3 r6 w( Q. j& \4 U8 o/ P! j, e
It can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit 0 }8 e' i4 t7 W( h- D0 _! d
of sacrifice.6 ]: v( S3 Q' |3 t, J& T, p% z

0 a3 q' D- G# S) ~2 `8 P2 y7 zSo let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each 8 g+ v6 B( I8 [9 d1 x: j6 ~
of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ' K  `+ W0 S) p  D, z
ourselves but each other.% S6 A4 }  p$ ?$ U# c

# z+ z' v+ H5 dLet us remember that, if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's 2 ~3 E) u* i' h8 _+ N$ c4 {
that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers.. d  l! C- j+ F! p
2 a1 u/ b1 L" V8 e
In this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people. Let's resist
# X: R+ m0 N; C; gthe temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and $ n* M0 k) b7 y7 a# H
immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long., [+ ]) V! l; W$ c# W" A9 V3 a, P
# l- z/ v; N" ?, ]2 q
Let's remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the
  g1 y* k/ A4 d: Rbanner of the Republican Party to the White House, a party founded on the
6 }5 W- [9 F9 s7 @# w: Nvalues of self-reliance and individual liberty and national unity.
" w/ t  C; D. Y/ s9 t
, q( _/ K8 c" w: O1 J" B& GThose are values that we all share. And while the Democratic Party has won
9 B. \8 E/ s) ~a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and   u' \9 Z: s. h5 J/ p, y- y
determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress.
" H1 ~8 m3 ?6 P6 U. L% ?0 t
8 {9 r4 z0 t2 _7 C8 XAs Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, we are not enemies
* t6 P) B& J) [7 @( \but friends. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds % Q3 A9 L  Y$ A8 s! M
of affection./ H% E3 D. f# B4 W! g4 Q
& w. |# }1 W0 B. Y
And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn, I may not have won
/ o$ j' z9 [' @your vote tonight, but I hear your voices. I need your help. And I will be . [2 J3 o  Q& E
your president, too.
& e: h9 Q) V+ S+ n: l, X! e5 ^: q  n. l( G, P8 }, m. x, v
And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments
! R' _$ D0 ?) z; n% J- t: i- kand palaces, to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten
* V. t. X8 F* vcorners of the world, our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, ( K9 c$ |! E3 n$ ]# Z% s
and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand.6 h4 H( Y' T3 \+ C

To those -- to those who would tear the world down: We will defeat you. To # u0 `  \7 u1 _8 r' R) ], y
those who seek peace and security: We support you. And to all those who 0 u. O) k: ]  Y0 W2 O6 ]* R  [
have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright: Tonight we proved
  ?9 f9 r- ]) V6 |# I+ L) t! Tonce more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of 4 H- \/ s: A* r( D* \/ D6 m1 D3 F% F
our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our
, p5 p* Y$ `7 M6 Uideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope." r) N! |! i7 S4 P1 g1 \& J

That's the true genius of America: that America can change. Our union can " a! ?, X# J0 I& j  _4 y
be perfected. What we've already achieved gives us hope for what we can and ( j5 R' V* s5 ^* Z1 D
must achieve tomorrow.
" d5 R* O. q7 @  O  w4 J0 x2 k( Q: d
! z2 r. Y6 n+ F# x0 iThis election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for 8 v  ], z4 i6 z2 ], A1 [( l6 A
generations. But one that's on my mind tonight's about a woman who cast her
& d5 L9 B7 f1 Z7 U# Nballot in Atlanta. She's a lot like the millions of others who stood in 8 @# L6 K! l' w' k+ [
line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing: Ann $ H& a1 `6 k3 Z1 O) z
Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.0 ?, I& Y/ \: c4 {( k& b% M* D$ n
3 A% B' r. ~. y% d/ ^
She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars
1 |. w3 |' Y7 A( q- m# von the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn't vote for 8 c+ t$ {9 q: x" K5 b1 Z
two reasons -- because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.. Z" e" Y5 T- Q0 L/ Y
) g9 R5 M' o+ N; F4 ~3 k
And tonight, I think about all that she's seen throughout her century in
1 s7 N/ G  c- c0 m2 W$ AAmerica -- the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the
4 F& Y) S- e7 E4 N4 b2 Ntimes we were told that we can't, and the people who pressed on with that
" a9 G) R  C  a& U/ G9 SAmerican creed: Yes we can.% y4 A2 f3 G1 O" Z1 {1 e; Z

3 c, j2 ?8 C  f, i5 b/ M4 L2 CAt a time when women's voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she
/ T7 E. a9 p0 T' N" |lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot. Yes we
5 c$ U" U. ~$ d5 Y6 l9 U4 Z: Pcan.+ H) `1 @/ _2 B+ ]  T0 M
/ `5 a0 w) i7 j0 h
When there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she
1 {/ ?! K+ ~) L1 ssaw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs, a new sense of 1 c& q1 }4 s$ M4 @5 ?% `) n- f1 F
common purpose. Yes we can.
) k" O* Q) j. Q$ e
1 v* H( J- i) |When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was $ c5 Y( j' s/ u$ m8 E' T/ D+ S5 W
there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved. $ a: s% G$ ^/ `, K% E( s
Yes we can.: t  I" o& z: D, _9 F3 `
7 ?. p; m2 y$ H" K7 |
She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a
) d7 M) ~2 u# b! z! b' [% M$ x. Ybridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that "We
2 s( M% ]5 t* C9 k3 K3 IShall Overcome." Yes we can.( n4 z4 N9 r4 d1 O6 n1 w
8 @' s8 p/ S2 m* F7 K3 K
A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was ( h. f- m7 b- j% j! D$ @4 @
connected by our own science and imagination.9 {  B1 i- m6 C& L+ B1 o1 r

, W5 v& M* ~/ b' MAnd this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and $ ]8 O0 j- z) t1 E8 D
cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of . M6 R% A/ s* z0 {1 v" j0 D  b4 z
times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change." J$ A: \# S" g- B3 c' w

; E! N( j  u9 d0 U; P- kYes we can.
$ J% A  G3 m# ~$ x) {. |; q
! l) u3 u! b- Z' a7 a" NAmerica, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much
  M+ F5 n* L! [  C1 j6 W3 x$ Gmore to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves -- if our children should live ' |3 i0 E  K$ h( V! J
to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long
0 M3 u/ Z8 z$ ^as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have
8 H0 L9 |% \6 r+ Y3 d) vmade?. }1 Q  l' K0 O) |5 n! I5 r0 R) h3 r
3 j! c" z2 i! O: a0 q! Z: H3 N
This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment.7 N# t6 B" Y3 T6 C% ^* h% `

+ C& l- {8 ^3 S, X0 \  u3 Y! I+ IThis is our time, to put our people back to work and open doors of
* z1 e0 ^# c3 _opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of % t  v& b) g: P7 z( J1 |" G0 |# s
peace; to reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth, - `' ?, \2 E% ?$ [) E6 W+ N* i4 ]
that, out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope. And where we . m& N6 m% u1 |% r/ m) C- d
are met with cynicism and doubts and those who tell us that we can't, we   f1 F! }' k6 H+ o/ ], P. l  j# I
will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people:
